March Nature Swap Quest

Boston Neck Road (Route 1A), North Kingstown

Join Rhode Island Families In Nature for the March Nature Swap Quest. Known to many simply as Rome Point, the Chafee Nature Preserve is one of the few natural spaces in RI that may be more popular in the colder months than any other season. Harbor seals migrate into this area in October and stay through the winter and spring.

This hike is 2.5 miles long and may be challenging to young children – but the potential to see Harbor Seals will definitely motivate them!

Please give yourself plenty of time to find parking and ready yourself for our hike. Usually I am not so strict about the time we start. However, the best time to view the seals is during low tide so we will want to start hiking and get to Rome Point as quickly as possible.

This hike can easily take 2-3 hours. Plan to stay a while at Rome Point, where we will watch the seals, is a great place to explore and play.

Please dress appropriately! It can be quite windy at Rome Point, so bring layers and a hat and gloves.

Bring plenty of snacks and water, as well as a picnic lunch!

If you have binoculars or a spotting scope, be sure to bring them along.

Nature Play Grant:

For the third year in a row, the Roger Williams Park Zoo was one of the recipients of a Nature Play grant, which was developed by the Children & Nature Network (C&NN) and the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) through a special gift from the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund. This grant allows us to offer free nature based play experiences in various parks, playgrounds, preserves, and other properties that are off zoo grounds–but easy to get to! If transportation support is needed, please contact Samantha Polon at (401) 785-3510 x353 for information about FREE RIPTA bus passes.

Each FNPD is also a Nature Swap “Quest” and allows participants to earn 5,000 bonus points in their accounts. Participants in the program bring in natural “found” items to collect points for swapping with items in their collection. To earn 5,000 points for this quest, bring a photo, drawing or natural item from your hike at Rome Point into the Nature Swap, located in Roger Williams Park Zoo’s Hasbro’s our Big Backyard, which is open 10-2, Friday to Monday.
