May Quest

Appalachian Wildlife Refuge, a wildlife rehabilitation nonprofit in Western North Carolina, recycles old mascara wands to help remove fly eggs and larva from the fur of animals. They work great because the bristles are so close together and gentle to use on the injured and orphaned wild animals receiving care.

The organization asks that you do not purchase new wands for this project. This is a recycling and repurposing project so please bring in used wands only. We ask that wands are in the very least rinsed off prior to drop off. They recommend washing with dish soap and warm water, however, we will be rewashing all wands prior to shipping them. We are only collecting the actual brushes and not the bottom part that holds the mascara.

The drop off bin is the nature swap room located in Hasbro’s Our Big Backyard of The Roger Williams Park Zoo, open Wednesday-Sunday, 10-1.

You can earn 1,000 points for every clean wand you bring in.
