October Nature Swap Quest

Saturday, October 1, 2016
Shannock Road, South Kingstown

Join Rhode Island Families In Nature for a free Family Nature Play Date (FNPD) at Browning Woods!

RI Families in Nature is teaming up with the South Kingstown Land Trust for the first of their “All Ages ParkRx Hikes”. This is a pilot program of the RI Land Trust Council based on the National ParkRx Initiative, in which healthcare providers “prescribe” time in nature to encourage a healthier lifestyle.

Families will explore the easy, mostly flat 3-mile trail through pine barrens and woodlands and past the old Browning Homestead. Shorter outing options are available. The parking lot for this park is quite small, so please be sure to give yourself enough time to find a parking spot on Shannock Rd. or Moraine Ct. and meet at the trail head. Please be certain to be respectful and mindful of local residents’ driveways and mailboxes.

And you can earn 5,000 points through the Zoo’s Nature Swap. Participants in the program bring in natural “found” items to collect points for swapping with items in their collection.

To earn 5,000 Nature Swap Quest Points you must:

  • Attend the FNPD in the Browning Woods  on Saturday, October 1st at 10:00 a.m.
  • Create a journal page to address the following: Describe or draw at least one way spending time outside can improve your health.
  • Bring some sort of photographic/journal book evidence that you attended the FNPD to the Nature Swap in the RWPZoo’s Big Backyard children’s space. (Nature Swap hours are Friday-Monday 10:00am–2:00pm.)

Nature Play Grant

For the third year in a row, the Roger Williams Park Zoo was one of the recipients of a Nature Play grant, which was developed by the Children & Nature Network (C&NN) and the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) through a special gift from the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund. This grant allows us to offer free nature based play experiences in various parks, playgrounds, preserves, and other properties that are off zoo grounds–but easy to get to! If transportation support is needed, please contact Samantha Polon at (401) 785-3510 x353 for information about FREE RIPTA bus passes. Each FNPD is also a Nature Swap “Quest” and allows participants to earn 5,000 bonus points in their accounts.
