October Nature Swap Quest-Nocturnal Animals

(Apologies for the late posting of the October Quest. It may be turned in at any point in November or December for full points!)

October is a great time to learn about some our spookier animal friends, including those who are awake during the night! Humans are diurnal, which means we sleep at night and are active during the day. Nocturnal animals wake up when the sun goes down, and sleep during the day! For 5000 points this month, pick your favorite nocturnal animal and do some research on them. What adaptations does it have that allow it to be active at night? Why do you think this animal has evolved to be awake at night? Some things to think about are what the weather is in your animal's habitat? Is it really hot during the day? What kind of predators are around? Does hiding and sleeping during the day mean your animal is less likely to get hunted? Send what animal you chose, three facts you learned, and (if you'd like!) any drawings or journal pages you create to natureswap@rwpzoo.org to get your points! If you need to pick an animal, or are looking for facts, check out National Geographic Kids (linked below) to get you started!
